Physical Development

At WHPS we want our children to be healthy, active and to enjoy sporting activities. Our fantastic early years outdoor space provides plenty of opportunities throughout the day for children to develop strength, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility.

Children in reception also have a PE lesson once a week with our specialist PE coach. The sessions have a different focus each term. At the end of the year, we hold our EYFS Sports Day, which is a really fun event and very well-supported by parents!

We provide a range of activities to help develop fine motor skills to promote independence. For example, managing buttons, cutlery and using classroom tools. The making area is so much more fun when you can operate tools such as scissors, hole punches and treasury tags proficiently!

Fine motor skills are crucial for holding pens and pencils and being able to form letters to write. Dough gym in nursery is fun and helps us to develop strength and movement in shoulders, arms, wrist, hands and fingers.
